Good nutrition during pregnancy

Nutrition plays a vital role in pregnancy women. Before you get pregnant, eat healthy food to maintain proper nutrition.  Nutrition helps you minimize excessive weight gain. The proper amount of protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains is highly suggested for pregnant women and their baby to protect their health.

You should need to make small modifications to your diet to accommodate your baby, because you should be “eating for two”, adding approximately 300 calories to your daily food intake. Try to add high protein like fish, yogurt, almonds and eggs to every meal, drink 64 ounces ( 5 to 6 litres) of water per day and avoid sugary beverages, which boost your risk for gestational diabetes. Pregnant women should avoid consumption of raw meats, and also unpasteurized milks, cheeses and fruit juices.

During pregnancy, women gain weight; with the help of your obstetrician, you can manage how much you gain. For an individual, average weight gained depends on the BMI (Body Mass Index).  The average woman gains 10-25 pounds, but to an extent level, excess weight gain should be controlled by consulting your doctor.

11-20 pounds - Those with a BMI over 30 (considered obese)
15-25 pounds - Those with a BMI from 25-29
25-35 pounds - Those with a BMI from 18 – 24 (average weight)
